He also disappears for a while midway through the novel. Anton doesn't have a whole lot of personality, and he's way too much a part of a not so nice crowd. Ruined starts off well, but there are some issues. It's also nice that Rebecca has a social conscience and wants to do something to help rebuild the city, even if her ideas aren't exactly welcomed by her fellow students. I liked that Katrina comes up a lot and Morris doesn't shy away from talking about the devastation. The author captures the feel of New Orleans and its history well. I really enjoyed the historical aspect of the book (we learn all about the ghost's past and why she's still around). She soon learns that her new friend is a ghost. She meets a young woman in the local graveyard and they become friends. There's a potential love interest (of course) and a mystery. She's a fish out of water, surrounded by snobs at her new school. Ruined is the story of a teenage girl, Rebecca, who's been uprooted from her comfortable life in New York City and sent to live with an old family friend in New Orleans.
